General Info

WHAT ARE THESE MAILING LISTS?
The mailing lists work very much like a magazine subscription (except they are free).  You can subscribe or unsubscribe at any time.  If you are subscribed, you will receive mail whenever a message is sent to the list.

WHO CAN USE THE LISTS
The short answer is everybody.  Some lists have more restrictions than others.  Usually only one person can send mail to everybody on the list, but this is not true for all lists.  Also, lists can be  private, meaning you will have to ask permission to join.

HOW DO I USE THESE LISTS
The list can be controlled completely through e-mail, but there is also a web-based interface.  For more information, look at the Help!!! section below.

CAN I START A LIST HERE?
If you have something of interest, why not?  Send me mail at webmaster@slick.org.

HELP!!!

Note:  For the purposes of these instructions, we will use a test mailing list named “pogo”.  Any time you see the word “pogo”, replace it with the list of your choice.

SUBSCRIBING TO A MAILING LIST

Send an email to: majordomo@slick.org

in the body of the email (not the subject header) simply type:

"subscribe pogo" [do not include the quotes and remember to change pogo to your list]

If for some reason you wish to have the mailings go to a different address (a friend's address, a specific other system on which you have an account, or an address which is more correct than the one that automatically appears in the "From:" header on the mail you send), you would add that address after the word "pogo".

For instance, if you're sending a request from your work account, but wish to receive pogo mail at your personal account (for which we will use "jqpublic@my-isp.com" as an example), you'd put the line in the massage body (not the subject header) in the mail message body:

"subscribe pogo jqpublic@my-isp.com" [again, skip the quotes and switch the name]

To validate your e-mail address (and to prevent mischievous users from signing up random people) the server may require you to confirm your subscription.  If this is the case, you will receive a piece of e-mail with instructions and a code to mail back to majordomo@slick.org. If you do not mail this code back, you will not be subscribed!!!  The server will confirm your successful subscription.

Upon subscribing, you should receive an introductory message, containing list policies and features.  Save this message for future reference; it will also contain exact directions for unsubscribing.  If you lose the intro mail and would like another copy of the policies, send this message to majordomo@slick.org:

"intro pogo" [once again, don't use the quotes and switch the name]

UNSUBSCRIBING FROM A MAILING LIST

Your original intro message contains the exact command which should be used to remove your address from the list.  However, in most cases, you may simply send the command "unsubscribe" followed by the list name:

"unsubscribe pogo" [for the final time, don't type the quotes]

FURTHER MAILING LIST HELP

Majordomo has many features that you can take advantage of.  For a comprehensive list of features, send mail to majordomo@slick.org and include the word "help" in the message (not the subject).  The software will send you an e-mail listing all of the features available.

Slick.ORG also provides a web-based interface for managing your subscriptions to the mailing lists.  Go to http://www.slick.org/cgi-bin/majordomo to access this interface.

Finally, if you really want to get to a source of info...  Majordomo's website is located at Great Circle Associates.  This will probably be way too much info for you, but indulge yourself if you must.

Web-Based Interface

Slick.ORG also offers a Web-Based alternative for managing your subscriptions.  Currently, MajorCool is the only interface.  To access this interface, simply click here:
